Supporting Future Early Childhood Professionals Through Makaton Training
I have had the privilege of delivering Makaton training annually for Norland, supporting students as they develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed for their future careers working with young children.
Formerly Norland College, the Bath-based specialist institution officially became Norland University of Early Childhood in September 2026, becoming the world's first university dedicated to early childhood.
The university continues Norland's long-standing focus on combining academic learning with practical professional preparation.
My ongoing relationship with Norland reflects the importance of introducing Makaton and accessible communication approaches to professionals at the beginning of their careers.
About Norland
Norland is a specialist higher education provider based in Bath with a long history of education and professional training in early childhood.
Founded in 1892, Norland has developed a distinctive approach that combines academic study with practical professional preparation. Students study the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Education and Care degree alongside the Norland Diploma, gaining experience and skills designed to prepare them for professional roles working with children and families.
In September 2026, Norland reached an important milestone when it officially became Norland University of Early Childhood. The university describes its specialist focus as advancing education, research and professional practice in early childhood.
It is within this specialist environment that I deliver Makaton training to students each year.
The Training
Introducing Makaton to Future Early Childhood Professionals
My annual training sessions introduce students to Makaton and demonstrate how signs and symbols can be incorporated into everyday communication.
The training is designed to be practical and engaging, giving students an opportunity to learn about Makaton while considering how it can be used in real-world early childhood settings.
Rather than simply learning signs and symbols in isolation, students are encouraged to think about communication as part of their wider professional practice.
This includes considering how visual communication can support understanding, participation and interaction and how Makaton can become part of everyday routines and activities.
Why Makaton Matters in Early Childhood
Early childhood practitioners work with children with a wide range of communication abilities and needs.
For some children, spoken language may not be their most effective way of communicating. Others may benefit from additional visual support while their speech and language skills are developing.
Makaton can provide another way for children to communicate and for adults to support their understanding.
Introducing future early childhood professionals to Makaton gives them an additional communication tool that they can draw upon throughout their careers.
The training also encourages students to think about communication from the perspective of the individual child and to consider how adults can adapt their own communication to reduce barriers.

Throughout their studies, Norland students combine academic learning with practical skills development and extensive placement experience. Norland states that its undergraduate students complete more than 1,200 hours of placements across settings including schools, nurseries, hospitals and specialist settings.
This makes the practical application of communication particularly relevant.
When students understand how Makaton can be used in real environments, they can begin to recognise opportunities to incorporate it into their future practice.

My aim is for students to leave the session with more than a collection of signs and symbols.
I want them to understand the principles behind using Makaton effectively and to feel confident about incorporating it into their communication with children.

Delivering Makaton training for Norland annually has allowed me to develop an ongoing relationship with the organisation and its students.
Rather than being a one-off training session, the relationship provides an opportunity to introduce Makaton to new groups of students each year.
This is particularly valuable because every new cohort represents another group of future early childhood professionals who may go on to work across nurseries, schools, family settings and other early childhood environments.
By introducing Makaton during their professional education, students can begin their careers with greater awareness of accessible communication and practical experience of using Makaton.

I particularly value opportunities to work with universities and higher education providers because they allow me to share practical experience with professionals who are still developing their careers.
My work with Norland brings together two areas that are central to my own professional experience: Makaton and Early Years practice.
Having worked across Early Years, education, health and social care, I understand the importance of making communication training relevant to the environments in which professionals actually work.
For Norland students, the training provides an opportunity to develop an additional communication skill that can support their future work with children.
For me, it is an opportunity to help embed accessible communication into the professional development of the next generation of early childhood practitioners.

The university's specialist focus on early childhood education, research and professional practice makes communication an important part of preparing students for their future roles.

Sunshine Support is an award-winning SEND consultancy supporting children, young people, families and professionals. I delivered a Makaton Workshop for Early Years at Herons' Moor Academy, focusing on practical ways staff could use Makaton to support communication within their setting.
Why use Makaton in an Early Years environment?
The Early Years are such an important stage for communication development. Some children may have difficulty understanding spoken language, expressing themselves verbally or communicating their needs.
Makaton can provide an additional visual layer to spoken communication, helping children to understand, participate and communicate.
What did the session cover?
The workshop combined learning Makaton signs and symbols with discussion around how they can be used within everyday Early Years practice.
We explored situations including:

These are important questions because Makaton isn't only for children who are non-speaking. Signs and symbols can provide additional support for children with a range of communication needs.

The focus throughout the workshop was on making communication practical, consistent and meaningful.
Rather than expecting practitioners to add something completely new to an already busy day, we explored how Makaton could be easily incorporated into routines, play and interactions that were already taking place.

I have had the opportunity to deliver Makaton training at Royal United Hospitals Bath, supporting healthcare professionals to develop their awareness, knowledge and confidence in using Makaton and visual communication.
What began with an initial bespoke Makaton workshop developed into an ongoing relationship, with me being invited back four times to deliver training to different teams and individuals across the hospital.

The Challenge
Making Healthcare Communication More Accessible
Hospitals and healthcare environments can be busy, unfamiliar and sometimes overwhelming.
For people who have communication difficulties, being in hospital can create additional challenges. They may find it difficult to understand information, communicate their needs, make choices or know what is going to happen next.
The aim of the training was to give healthcare professionals practical communication tools that could help them support people who use Makaton or who may benefit from signs, symbols and visual communication.
The focus wasn't simply on learning signs and symbols. It was about helping staff understand how Makaton and visual communication can support real interactions with patients.
My Approach
Practical & Relevant to Healthcare
My workshops are designed to be practical, engaging and relevant to the professionals attending.
During the sessions, staff had the opportunity to learn and practise useful Makaton signs and consider how these could be incorporated into their everyday interactions.
I also adapted the sessions around the different roles and environments of each team.
For example, A&E staff may need to communicate effectively with patients in situations that are fast-paced and potentially stressful.
Dentistry teams may need to help patients understand what is going to happen, make choices and feel more comfortable during appointments.
Physiotherapists and occupational therapists may use visual communication to support understanding, participation and choice during therapy and rehabilitation.
For nursing and Learning Disability teams, Makaton and visual communication can provide additional ways of supporting patients to express their needs and understand information.
