Makaton Training for Future Professionals

I have had the opportunity to deliver Makaton training as a Guest Lecturer to many students over the years including those studying at SGS College, Norland University of Early Childhood, University of the West of England, University Centre Weston, Bath Spa University , helping future professionals develop practical awareness of inclusive communication.

SGS College – Sports Degree Students

Working with Sports Degree students at SGS College, I introduced students to Makaton and visual communication in the context of sport and community settings. The sessions explored how communication needs can affect participation and how simple, practical communication approaches can help make activities more accessible and inclusive.

The training encouraged students to think beyond their own communication and consider how they could adapt their approach when working with children, young people and adults with different communication needs.

Norland University of Early Childhood

I provide annual Makaton training for students at Norland University of Early Childhood, supporting future early childhood professionals to develop practical communication skills that they can take into their careers.

The training introduces students to Makaton signs and symbols and, importantly, focuses on how these can be used alongside speech in everyday situations. Students consider how Makaton can support understanding, choices, participation and communication within early childhood settings.

Preparing Students for Professional Practice

Both experiences demonstrate the value of introducing Makaton and inclusive communication during professional education. Whether students are preparing for careers in sport, Early Years, education, health or other people-focused professions, understanding communication barriers can help them create more inclusive environments.

My aim is to make training practical and relevant, giving students knowledge and confidence they can carry forward into their future professional roles.
