A mother's perspective

"My wonderful daughter is autistic and non verbal, communication was difficult in her early years.

I saw all of the amazing work Ali has done within the community, schools, care providers and businesses etc for providing Makaton training. I attended a Makaton training event provided by Ali and within minutes, I learned so much.

I was worried at first that it would be really difficult to learn but Ali made me feel at ease and didn't move onto the next section until we all understood and could sign with confidence. Ali's teaching is very engaging and concise.

Thanks to Ali, I can now communicate with my daughter - this means the world. Communication was always frustrating for my daughter and Makaton has changed our lives, everything is so much easier now.

An aunt's perspective

"We have a beautiful little niece who is non-verbal autistic. As a family, we wanted to be able to communicate with her and better understand what she is saying using Makaton, much of which she has learned herself from Mr Tumble and TV.

Having followed Ali for many years, I contacted her to ask for her help. She asked lots of questions about our niece’s likes and interests and then designed a Makaton session especially for us. Some of the group had no Makaton knowledge at all, but Ali was amazing at teaching us together as a group, making sure we were all at the same level.

We then split into smaller groups to practise sentences, and by the end of the session we were able to sign so many words and everyday phrases. Since then, we have been using Makaton all the time to communicate with our precious girl. She loves it so much that we now understand her better, and we believe it is also helping her to develop some speech.
