Diary of a Makaton Tutor: Building Confidence Through Communication Makaton Level 3

This week, I travelled to Midsomer Norton to deliver Level 3 Makaton training for the wonderful team at SWALLOW. It was a fantastic day of learning, discussion and practical signing—but one that also coincided with one of the hottest days of the year!

Despite the soaring temperatures, the enthusiasm in the room never faded. Armed with plenty of water bottles, open windows, fans a plenty and a good sense of humour, everyone remained focused on developing their Makaton skills.

The day was made even better when we were treated to ice creams during the afternoon—a very welcome break before we got back to signing.

Building on the Foundations of Levels 1 and 2

Level 3 is always one of my favourite workshops to deliver because this is where participants begin to move beyond simply remembering signs and start developing real confidence in using Makaton naturally.

Having already completed Levels 1 and 2, the group arrived with a solid foundation of knowledge and were ready to take the next step in their communication journey. It was wonderful to watch their confidence grow throughout the day as they explored new vocabulary and applied their skills in practical situations.

Developing Translation and Interpretation Skills

One of the key focuses of Level 3 is learning Stages 5 and 6 of the Core Vocabulary, but the course offers so much more than expanding vocabulary.

Participants explored how to:

• Identify the key information within spoken language

• Simplify sentences while maintaining their meaning

• Select the most appropriate Makaton vocabulary

• Develop effective translation and interpretation skills

• Communicate more naturally and confidently

These techniques help participants move away from word-for-word signing and towards meaningful communication that supports understanding for the people they work with every day.

Understanding Sign Analysis

Another important part of the workshop focused on sign analysis.

By understanding how signs are formed and recognising the key features that make them accurate, participants become more confident in their signing. This not only improves fluency but also helps learners self-correct, retain vocabulary more effectively and continue building their communication skills long after the training has finished.

Watching these moments of confidence develop is one of the most rewarding aspects of delivering Level 3 training.

Sharing Experiences and Learning Together

One of the highlights of the day wasn't just the signing—it was the conversations.

Participants openly shared experiences from their own workplaces, discussing how they currently use Makaton and exploring ways they could develop communication even further.

These discussions always reinforce an important message: Makaton is far more than learning signs and symbols. It is about creating opportunities for people to understand, express themselves, and participate more fully in everyday life.
