Diary of a Makaton Tutor: Delivering Makaton in Primary Schools - From First Steps to Embedding a Total Communication Approach

This week, I had the opportunity to work with two fantastic primary schools, both at different stages of their Makaton journey—but united by the same goal: creating a fully inclusive, total communication environment for their pupils.

A Makaton Taster Workshop: Sparking Confidence and Curiosity

The first school welcomed me for a two-hour Makaton taster workshop. These sessions are all about introducing the core principles of Makaton and showing how simple signs and symbols can transform communication in the classroom.

It didn’t take long for staff to begin engaging with the signs, and as confidence grew, so did the excitement. One of the most rewarding parts of any taster session is seeing that shift in mindset—when staff realise that Makaton benefits all children, not just those with additional needs.

By the end of the workshop, there was a real sense of motivation, with staff already discussing how they could start embedding Makaton into their daily routines.

Level 1 Makaton Training: Building Skills and Embedding Practice

The second school has already begun their training journey and has now completed the first half of their Level 1 Makaton programme.

Staff were not only recalling signs within a short space of time but beginning to use them more naturally in conversation. There was a clear commitment across the team to support one another and ensure consistency—an essential part of embedding Makaton successfully.

This is where the real impact begins. When Makaton moves beyond training sessions and becomes part of everyday communication, it starts to shape a truly inclusive environment.

Creating a Total Communication Environment in Schools

What stood out most during both visits was the shared passion for inclusion. Both schools are working towards training all staff and building a whole-school approach to communication.

A total communication environment means that children are supported in multiple ways—through speech, signs, symbols, visuals, and gestures—helping every child to understand and be understood.

This approach doesn’t just support learning; it builds confidence, reduces frustration, and helps children feel seen, heard, and included.

Top Tips for Embedding Makaton in Primary Schools

  • Start small and stay consistent – Introduce a few key signs and use them regularly throughout the day

  • Get the whole team involved – Consistency across all staff makes a huge difference

  • Use Makaton in everyday routines – Snack time, transitions, and greetings are perfect opportunities

  • Visuals matter – Pair signs with symbols and displays to reinforce understanding

  • Celebrate progress – Recognise both staff and pupil achievements to keep motivation high

Final Thoughts

Working with schools that are so committed to embedding Makaton is always inspiring. Whether it’s taking those very first steps in a taster session or building confidence through formal training, every stage of the journey matters.

When schools invest in communication, they invest in every child’s ability to thrive.
